Permanent scholarship fund honors J. Alex and Ruby Henson Haggard

February 4, 2008 – Stanton, Texas – The J. Alex and Ruby Henson Haggard Scholarship Fund has been established by lifelong Martin County resident Ruby Haggard in memory of her husband, Alex, who died in 2002. The high school sweethearts, who were married almost 59 years, reared three children, all of whom graduated from Texas universities. Generous of their time and resources, Alex, a cotton farmer, cattleman, and home builder shared with Ruby a deep and abiding belief in education and the value it can have on an individual’s life and an improved world as well.

Scholarships from the J. Alex and Ruby Henson Haggard Scholarship Fund will be awarded to graduates of West Texas high schools located in Andrews, Borden, Cochran, Coke, Crane, Dawson, Ector, Gaines, Garza, Glasscock, Hockley, Howard, Kent, Loving, Lynn, Martin, Midland, Mitchell, Pecos, Reagan, Reeves, Scurry, Sterling, Upton, Ward, Winkler and Yoakum. Awards are based on academic excellence, community service, and need. Preference will be given to those pursuing degrees in agriculture/ranch management, architecture, library science, historic preservation, and landscape architecture.
