Charitable Funds - Scholarship Funds

Scholarship Funds are established by donors to provide students with opportunities to further their education or training. Donors may identify criteria for awards including considerations of need, area of study, academic performance and extracurricular activities.

Association of Energy Service Companies Scholarship Fund
The Permian Basin Chapter of the Association of Energy Service Companies established this fund with the Foundation to provide scholarships to students graduating or who have graduated from Permian Basin area high schools.

Tyler Berry Memorial Soccer Scholarship Fund
In cooperation with the Midland High Soccer Booster Club, scholarship awards are made each spring to a male and female Midland High Soccer player from this fund created by family and friends of Tyler Berry.

Candy Sue Bowers Memorial Scholarship Fund
The late Geraldine Longbotham Bowers created this scholarship fund in memory of her daughter, former Midlander Candy Sue Bowers.

Geraldine Longbotham Bowers Scholarship Fund
This fund was established in memory of Mrs. Bowers by her brother and his wife Dr. and Mrs. Jack Longbotham for the purpose of granting scholarships for higher education to graduates of Permian Basin area high schools.

Linda Ann Bowers Scholarship Fund
The late Geraldine Longbotham Bowers created this scholarship fund in honor of her daughter, Linda Ann Bowers.

Photo - Wally KleineBulldog Excel Scholarship Fund
Established by the late Wally Kleine, scholarships from this fund are awarded to Midland High School scholar/athletes who demonstrate sportsmanship and team leadership. A Midland High football star, Wally was selected for the Texas All-State team in 1981. He went on to earn All American honors at Notre Dame, and played professionally with the Washington Redskins.

Scholarships are provided to selected West Texas students who are accepted into law school from this fund. It was established by donations from friends and family of Senior U.S. District Judge Lucius Bunton, who served as a federal judge from 1979 until his death in early 2001.

Della and Tom Campbell Family Scholarship Fund
Della Campbell, whose husband died in 1976, created this fund to provide college scholarships for students pursuing nursing and healthcare careers.

Through this fund, family and friends paid tribute to Patricia Cobb, a schoolteacher and guidance counselor in the Midland Independent School District for thirty years until her retirement. This fund makes available college scholarships for graduates of Midland High School who were active in athletics.

This fund was created by family and friends of Kristen Corbin who died in August 2007, just days before she was to begin her senior year at Andrews High School. Kristen was a dedicated student and star athlete and active in her church and community.

Mrs. June Cowden created this fund in memory of her husband Frank who died in 2006. In honor of Mr. Cowden’s longtime devotion to the Buffalo Trail Council, Boy Scouts of America, this fund provides higher education scholarships for young men of the Council who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

Charliene Giddeon Cox Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established by William A. Cox of Midland in memory of his wife and her love for education, this fund provides scholarships for graduates of Mrs. Cox’s alma mater, Drumright High School in Drumright, Oklahoma who have interests in English, literature, or science.

Katherine Rose Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund
Katherine Rose Davis lived a brief yet inspiring life. Her ten day struggle against infection at birth motivated the establishment of this scholarship fund for female graduates of high schools in Midland or Ector Counties, Texas, or Cheatham County, Tennessee who wish to pursue a degree in medicine or health care.

Dawson Geophysical Scholarship Fund
Friends of L. Decker Dawson established this fund on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dawson Geophysical Company in honor of the company and its founder. Scholarships are provided from this fund for students of geophysics.

In honor of Dorothy and Bob Deavenport’s lifetime of community service to Stanton and Martin County, this fund was established by friends and family to provide scholarships to graduates from high schools in Martin County and the surrounding area.

Jim and Reba Weatherbee Fox Scholarship Fund
Jim and Reba Fox established this fund to provide college scholarship support for students from Young County and the Permian Basin region of Texas.

Established by the family of Amy Gardner who died in a tragic accident in 2002, this fund provides scholarships for Andrews High band students to pursue higher education.

Mr. and Mrs. James W. Mims created this scholarship in memory of their daughter, Nancy Jo Mims Geers, a professional occupational therapist who devoted her life to assisting patients realize their full capacity.

Mrs. Ruby Haggard created this fund in memory of her husband Alex, who died in 2002. Scholarships are awarded to graduates of west Texas high schools based on academic excellence, community service, and need with preference given to those pursuing degrees in agriculture/ranch management, architecture, library science, historic preservation, and landscape architecture.

Marie Hall Scholarship Fund
Marie Hall created this fund to provide scholarships to residents of west Texas attending selected area colleges. Scholarships are awarded in varying amounts depending upon need and circumstances.

Dick Harris Scholarship Fund
Hispanic youth active in scouting are the recipients of scholarships from this fund created by Dick Harris.

John and Rose Marie Healy Memorial Scholarship Fund
A gift from the late Rose and John Healy established this fund which provides need-based scholarships to students, with priority given to those attending Midland College.

Friends and family of Elizabeth Henry created this fund providing scholarship aid to graduates of Lee High School.

Scholarships awarded from this fund, established in honor and memory of Clayton Welch Henson who was killed in action while serving our nation in Iraq, are designated for graduates of Stanton, Grady, and Greenwood High Schools.

Bonnie Brumley created this fund in honor of her mother and in memory of her father. Bob and Bobbie Hill were long time residents of Martin County.

Martin County High School graduates are awarded scholarships from this fund which was established in honor of Grace Loveless Jones, a longtime Martin County resident and civic leader.

Grace & Bob King Scholarship Fund
The Grace and Bob King Scholarship Fund was established by friends of longtime Odessans Grace and the late Bob King. The new scholarship fund was announced on February 28, 2008, at which Heritage of Odessa Founders recognized Mrs. King as “a community treasure who has expressed her true spirit of service over five decades … making Odessa a better place.”

Lamesa Golden Tornado Jubilee Scholarship Fund
Contributions given during Lamesa’s Golden Tornado Jubilee, a reunion recurring every five years for all classes of Lamesa High School, enabled the creation of this fund which awards scholarships to graduates of Lamesa High.

This fund was created by Von Dean Lawson in memory of Ted Lawson. Mr. Lawson created several successful oil and gas service companies and was a recognized leader in the Permian Basin oil and gas industry. This fund provides scholarships for married couples who are in pursuit of a college education.

Dorothy and the late Jimmie Mashburn created this fund to provide scholarships for Stanton High School graduates with preference given to those who attend Midland College.

Midland Reunion 2000 Scholarship Fund
Graduates of Midland and Lee High schools established this fund to award scholarships to students graduating from a high school within the Midland Independent School District.

Midland Texas Tech Alumni Scholarship Fund
Students attending Texas Tech University receive scholarship support from this fund created by Texas Tech Alumni of Midland.

Bill Mims was a Midland High graduate who sustained a football injury in the 1950s that rendered him a paraplegic. This fund was established in memory of Mr. Mims and his legacy of community service despite his disability.

This Fund was created by the friends of Joe Morales who died while serving as Odessa District Engineer of the Texas Department of Transportation. Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing a degree in civil engineering or a degree leading to a career in the highway construction industry.

Donnie Munsell Memorial Scholarship Fund
Family and friends of Donnie Munsell, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1981 at the age of 18, established this fund to provide scholarships to athletes who are graduating from Andrews High School.

This fund was created by family and friends of Stephen Neace who died in late 2007. Stephen was a graduate of Monahans High School and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. The fund provides scholarships to graduating seniors of Monahans High School who will be attending UTPB to study biology.

Ann and Roy Northern Memorial Scholarship Fund
Ann and Roy Northern’s son Scot Northern established this fund in honor and memory of his parents.

Tommy Norwood died in an automobile accident at the age of 22 during his senior year of college. This fund, established in his memory, provides scholarships to students based on financial need, extracurricular activities in school, church and community, interest in the pursuit of outdoor activities, and participation in high school athletics.

Joe M. Parsley Engineering Scholarship Fund
Midland independent oil and gas operator Joe M. Parsley established this fund which supports scholarships to students enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering.

Permian Basin Fair & Exposition Scholarship Fund
Initiated by the goal of recognizing youth participants in the Permian Basin Fair & Exposition held annually in Odessa, this fund provides college scholarships for graduates of Permian Basin high schools.

Permian Basin Geophysical Society Scholarship Fund
The Permian Basin Geophysical Society created this fund to provide scholarships to area students pursuing higher education with the intent to seek a career in the field of geosciences.

Permian Basin Scholarship for Petroleum Engineering
Midland oil operator Bill Wallace created this scholarship fund for undergraduates studying petroleum engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.

Permian Honor Scholarship Foundation Fund
Qualified students attending the University of Texas of the Permian Basin who achieve high academic standing receive scholarship assistance from this fund.

This scholarship fund, created by Johnny’s many family and friends, honors the long-time west Texas teacher and athletic coach. This fund will offer college scholarships to graduating seniors of Grady High School.

The legacy of lifelong teacher James C. Pitts, Jr. is memorialized by family and friends through the establishment of this fund. In keeping with Mr. Pitts’ devotion to helping all children learn, college-bound African-American graduates of Midland public schools receive academic scholarships from this fund.

Donations from friends and family of Blanche Plunkett, a retired Midland teacher, enabled the creation of this fund which provides scholarships to graduates of a Midland high school.

Curtis Pool Scholarship Fund
As a graduate of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Curtis Pool established this fund for students in need of financial assistance and who plan to attend UTPB full time in pursuit of an education that will be used to benefit society in general.

Rollinson/Posey Family Scholarship Fund
This fund was created by Elaine Magruder and her father, Ed Magruder, to provide academic and vocational scholarships for students of African American descent in honor of Smith Rollison and Hannah Posey, who were born into slavery in the 19th century.

Dan & Billye Saunders Scholarship Fund
Honoring longtime Martin County Sheriff Dan Saunders and his wife Billye, this fund offers scholarships to Martin County residents or high school graduates pursuing a career in law enforcement or criminal justice.

As a tribute to the life of Brian Semple who died in an automobile accident in 1989, friends and family created this fund through which renewable scholarships provide annual assistance to several area recipients to further their dreams of an education.

Standard Sales Company Scholarship Fund
This fund was created to award scholarships to full-time employees or dependents of full-time employees, of Standard Sales Company, L. P. or its subsidiaries.

Established in memory of Philip Steven Wickman by his family, this fund awards scholarships to graduates of Midland High School who played varsity football.

The family of Thelma Bayless Windham, a longtime resident of McCamey and Upton County, established this fund to provide resources for college-bound graduates of Upton County schools.

Jeb Worthy Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was created by Marie Hall in memory of Jeb Worthy, a graduate of St. Mary’s School in Big Spring. Scholarships from the fund are awarded to students attending Howard College.

J.M. Yater Memorial Scholarship Fund
Martin County students receive scholarships from this fund created by family and friends of J.M. Yater, a longtime educator in Martin County schools.

Galberson Zachery Scholarship Fund
Galberson Zachery, Sr. was a longtime employee of the Midland Independent School District and groundskeeper of Memorial Stadium. Former Midland High School student and football player Bo Baskin memorialized Mr. Zachery through the creation of this fund which awards an annual scholarship to a Midland High School scholar/athlete.

Permian Basin Area Foundation administers a number of funds the donors to which have requested anonymity. Funds of the Foundation are open to additional tax-deductible contributions. We also welcome the opportunity to visit with donors about creating new funds for charitable purposes.
