Annual Report - 2003
Dedication

This annual report is dedicated to the late Tom and Evelyn Linebery – partners for almost 70 years in marriage, ranching and philanthropy. Their legacy of generosity, widely manifested through the grantmaking of the Scarborough–Linebery Foundation since 1976, will be perpetuated by the permanent endowment funds established in their honor with Permian Basin Area Foundation.

Tom Linebery was born on a farm in Brown County, Texas, in 1910. He moved to Midland and went to work as an elevator operator in the Hogan Building (now called the Petroleum Building), in 1929. That same year, he met Evelyn Scarborough. Evelyn was a Midland girl, born in Merkel, and a member of the first graduating class of Texas Tech. When she met Tom, Evelyn was working in the Hogan Building office of her father, W. F. Scarborough, a well-known rancher in the region.

Evelyn and Tom were married in 1933, in the Scarborough home on South Main Street in Midland. Mr. Scarborough’s holdings included the Frying Pan Ranch near Kermit, Texas. The young Lineberys moved to the Frying Pan soon after their marriage and took over management in 1939 when Mr. Scarborough died.
Overcoming economic depression and the endless hardships that came with ranching, Tom and Evelyn built one of the largest and most productive ranching enterprises in west Texas and southeastern New Mexico.

The Lineberys’ stewardship of the land they loved earned them considerable respect and success. Moreover, their commitment and service to the community of fellowman earned them countless friends.

Tom and Evelyn created the Scarborough–Linebery Foundation in 1976 to further their support of higher education, health care, and services for the needy and disabled, and also ranching heritage.

Tom Linebery died on March 31, 2001, followed by his beloved Evelyn on April 15, 2001. The Scarborough–Linebery Foundation was dissolved and the Tom and Evelyn Linebery Memorial Endowment was established with Permian Basin Area Foundation during 2003.
