Legacy Story - Jimmie & Dorothy Mashburn

“We don’t have much of a story to tell,” Dorothy says humbly. “We were average students, making average grades, and we graduated from Stanton High School.”

Dorothy and Jimmie Mashburn were the down-home kids who did their chores before and after school and knew that if they got into trouble at school, their parents would hear about it before they got home.

Soon after he graduated from Stanton High in 1942, Jimmie was called to serve our country at war in Europe. When he returned in 1945, he took his GI Bill and what money he had saved and enrolled at Texas Tech. As it happens, he ran into a girl from Stanton. Dorothy had been two years behind Jimmie in high school— too young for Jimmie to notice. But while he was off fighting a war, Dorothy had grown up. They started dating while they were at Tech and eventually married in 1952.

“In 1953, Jimmie and his brothers built the house we’re living in now,” says Dorothy.

“I was working in the Spraberry oil fields,” Jimmie remembers. “I would get home late in the afternoon, so my brothers actually did most of the building.”

The Mashburns say they have had an “average” everyday life, with no exotic or expensive hobbies, no hidden sins—just a hardworking, happily married couple. When they retired, they traveled the U.S. and Canada in the Airstream trailer they bought in 1976. But they were always glad to get back home to West Texas.

Last year, the Mashburn’s established the Jimmie and Dorothy Mashburn Scholarship Fund to assist graduates of Stanton High School attend college.

“It’s very expensive to go to college, and these kids don’t have it easy,” says Dorothy. “Our fund is to help those who would not otherwise qualify for an academic or sports scholarship.”

“All we’re hoping to do,” adds Jimmie, “is give a youngster an opportunity to prepare for a successful career they will enjoy.”
